Profile

Tomoyuki Furuyashiki, M.D., Ph.D., is Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology at the Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Institute of Science Tokyo, Japan. He graduated from Kyoto University Faculty of Medicine in 1997, earned his Ph.D. from Kyoto University in 2001, and was appointed Assistant Professor at the same institution in 2003. Between 2004 and 2008, he served as an Associate Research Scientist at Johns Hopkins University. He subsequently returned to Kyoto University, initially as Assistant Professor and later as Associate Professor. In 2014, he became Professor and Chair of the Division of Pharmacology, Graduate School of Medicine, Kobe University. In 2025, he assumed his current position.
Dr. Furuyashiki is renowned for pioneering research into the neuronal and behavioral roles of inflammation under psychological stress and mental illnesses. Using animal models of chronic stress and aging, his laboratory applies cutting-edge technologies, including single-cell multi-omics analysis, whole-brain imaging, and molecular and neural-circuit manipulation techniques. These approaches enable his team to comprehensively investigate the mechanisms underlying brain functional alterations due to stress and aging, as well as the mechanisms of resilience, spanning multiple biological levels from molecules, cells, and neural circuits to brain-periphery interactions. His scientific contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Best President's Award from the Astellas Foundation for Research on Metabolic Disorders (2015) and the International College of Neuropsychopharmacology Brain Health Basic Research Award (2024).
Dr. Furuyashiki has served as an executive board member of both the Japanese Pharmacological Society and the Japanese Society of Neuropsychopharmacology and a program committee member of the Society for Neuroscience (U.S.A.). Additionally, he is a member of the Science Council of Japan, where he plays a vital role in promoting mental health research nationwide.
