Cell cycle, cancer, ubiquitin

After graduating from Tokyo Medical and Dental University School of Medicine in 1986, I studied immunology at Juntendo University Graduate School of Medicine (Prof. Ko Okumura), graduating in 1990 (M.D.). Thereafter, after working as a frontier researcher at RIKEN (team leader, Hiromitsu Nakauchi), I studied at the University of Washington in the U.S. (Prof. Dennis Y. Loh), and through the creation of knockout mice for various biological control molecules, I revealed for the first time in the world that cell cycle control molecules determine the body size and that their disruption causes cancer. In 1995, I returned to Japan and became a senior researcher at Roche Japan. I became a professor at the Medical Institute of Bioregulation, Kyushu University at 1996 (and a distinguished professor and director of the Center for Human Proteome Research since 2009). Now I am a distinguished professor of Tokyo Medical and Dental University. I received the JSPS Award in 2005, the JCA-Mauvernay Award in 2007, the Inoue Science Award in 2011, and the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2021.
